Flight to Ho Chi Minh City in the morning.
Upon arrival in Ho Chi Minh City, start your tour with The Reunification Palace, formerly the residence of the President of the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 April 1975, when North Vietnam soldiers set foot inside this building with the red flag in hand, the whole world knew that the Vietnam War had ended.
Next stop is the War Remnants Museum. On the way, stop to visit Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office, the two most famous and oldest examples of classical French colonial architecture, built more than 100 years ago. War Remnants Museum displays many photographs from both Vietnamese and US sources, and US military vehicles such as tanks, jets, and bombs are exhibited outside.
Before the tour ends, stop for shopping at Ben Thanh Market in the city center, then return to your hotel in Saigon.
Overnight at hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.
Depart for Cu Chi. Along the way, watch as the frantic city scenery transitions to a more peaceful, rural setting. Witness passing rice paddy farms, quaint roadside vendors, and increasingly lush greenery.
Once you arrive, begin with a tour of the Cu Chi Tunnels, some of the most famous underground networks of pathways, hideouts, sleeping quarters, meeting rooms, hospitals, and Hoang Cam Stove. These narrow tunnels provide barely enough space for a single person to crawl through, though some are now widened to accommodate visitors. Also learn that the 10–13 feet (3–4 m) thick upper soil layer can support the bearing weight of a 55-ton (50 mT) tank and withstand the explosive damage of bombs.
Following, watch an insightful film about the wartime experience before further exploring the tunnels’ trap doors and underground quarters. Then visit the huge bomb craters, the Garment-factory Ammunition and Souvenir Shops, and the Museum of Self-made Weapons.
Get the exhilarating opportunity to fire an M-15, AK-47, and carbine rifle at the National Defense Sports Shooting Range (at your own expense).
