Visa is a required document for any foreign tourist to enter a country. However, due to agreements made between Vietnam and some countries, citizens of those countries don’t need a visa to enter Vietnam. Instead, they will get a certificate of visa exemption. How much is Vietnam visa exemption fee?

There are two types of Vietnam visa exemption. The first one is a visa exemption for 15 to 30 days which is completely free. If you are a citizen of ASEAN countries, Korea or Japan, you don’t have to pay for Vietnam visa exemption fee. The second type is a 5-years visa exemption which requires your payment to get it. Who are eligible for the 5-years visa exemption?

If you are an overseas Vietnamese, you are eligible to apply for a 5-year visa-free certificate. The certificates will be granted by Immigration offices in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh or by overseas Vietnamese diplomatic missions and consulates. According to the Regulation on visa exemption, you are allowed to enter Vietnam without a visa if you are an overseas Vietnamese that holds foreign passport or a foreigner who is the wife, husband and child of a Vietnamese citizen. However, you can’t stay longer than 90 days for each entry.

A certificate of visa exemption

In order to be granted certificates of visa exemption at Vietnamese representative offices abroad, you need the following conditions: First, the foreign-issued permanent residence certificate (PRC) which is still valid for at least six months since the date of entrance. Second, you need a visa exemption paper (VEP) which is granted by Vietnamese appropriate authorities.

Overseas Vietnamese, foreign spouses and children of Vietnamese citizens or overseas Vietnamese can apply for entry visa exemption if you submit all the following papers:

  • Foreign passports with the validity of at least 6 months from the date of entry. For an overseas Vietnamese who doesn’t hold foreign passport must possess a residence permit. This certificate is granted by a foreign country must remain valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
  • Certificates of visa exemption granted by a competent Vietnamese agency.

If you are eligible, you will be granted a visa exemption certificate. For children who are sharing passports with their parents, the certificates of visa exemption will be granted together with passports of their fathers or mothers.

What papers do you need to apply for a visa exemption certificate?

According to the Regulation, foreign spouses or children of Vietnamese citizens or who are eligible for entry visa exemption need to submit dossiers as follows:

  • 01 declaration of application for a certificate of visa exemption
  • 02 4 cm x 6 cm color photos with white background of the applicant facing straight bareheaded without wearing dark glasses
  • A foreign passport which remains valid for at least 6 months from the entrance date

Besides, you need to prove your marital or parental relationship with overseas Vietnamese or Vietnamese citizens with one of the following papers: Marriage certificate, birth certificate, paper certifying parent-child relationship, decision on child adoption, or other valid papers as prescribed by Vietnamese law.

For overseas Vietnamese, you need to submit these papers:

  • 01 declaration of application for a certificate of visa exemption
  • 02 4 cm x 6 cm color photos with white background of the applicant facing straight bareheaded without wearing dark glasses
  • A foreign passport or a residence permit granted by a foreign country which remains valid for at least 6 months from the entrance date.

Also, you need to prove that you are an overseas Vietnamese with one of the following  papers: A certificate of Vietnamese nationality, a copy or duplicate of the decision on Vietnamese nationality restoration, a Vietnamese identity card, a birth certificate, the latest polling card, the household registration book, a laissez-passer granted before 1975, an identity card granted before 1975, a duplicate of the birth certificate granted before 1975, a copy or duplicate of the decision on Vietnamese nationality relinquishment, a certificate of loss of Vietnamese nationality, a Vietnamese passport, papers granted by a foreign competent agency which states that you have a Vietnamese nationality or is a Vietnamese native.

In case you don’t have any of those papers, you may submit one of the following: a paper of guarantee issued by an overseas Vietnamese association based in the country where you reside, a written affirmation by a Vietnamese citizen.
